Montclair Shukokai Karate wins two international karate medals.

Two students from Montclair Shukokai Karate,on Grove Street in Montclair, won Bronze medals at the Kimura Shukokai International World Championships that took place from July 20 – July 23 in Berlin, Germany. Lynn DeSalvo, a 2nd degree black belt, won a bronze medal in Individual Kata in the Ladies Veterans division. Devin Persaud, a 1st degree black belt, won a bronze medal in Individual Kumite (sparring) in the Boys Cadet (14/15 years old) division.These are the first international medals for both.
There were over 600 competitors from 18 countries in the field and the event is held every two years in a different country. Competitors perform kata, a choreographed sequence of movements; team kata, which is performed with a team of three people synchronizing their movements; kumite, or “sparring” with an opponent; and team kumite, where teams of at least three opponents spar against each other. Kimura Shukokai International has over 25,000 students in 22 countries around the globe.
