Montclair Teachers Union Reaches Handshake Deal With BOE

Montclair teachers have been working without a contract. A tentative deal could change that.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — The Montclair Public School District has reached a tentative contract agreement with the local teachers’ union, according to reports.

At the Montclair Board of Education’s June 5 meeting, BOE President Eve Robinson announced that the board’s contract negotiations team has reached a handshake agreement with the Montclair Education Association (MEA), which represents the district’s teachers.

The tentative agreement was reached after a long mediation session, Robinson said.

Members of the MEA have been working without a contract for almost a year. Specific MEA grievances have included "less take-home pay for teachers, cutbacks in maternity leave that go from generous one-year absences to the bare minimum of leave set by state law, and diminished health benefits.”
