Montclair Will Use Dogs To Chase Geese From Parks
A professional service will use trained border collies to chase geese from Edgemont and Yantacaw parks in Montclair starting on Monday.

If you see dogs chasing geese in a Montclair park next week, don’t scold them.
Montclair will be contracting with a professional geese clearing service to use border collies to remove birds from Edgemont and Yantacaw parks, starting on Monday, Dec. 7, according to a township release.
Town officials stated that the contacted company’s border collies, Geese Chasers LLC, are “specially bred and trained to herd or ‘harass’ geese without causing them harm, while discouraging them from congregating in the parks.”

During the initial clearing phase, the border collies and handlers will make multiple daily visits to the two parks in an effort to ensure a virtually geese-free environment, officials stated.
Dog walkers must keep their pets on leads at all times and they must avoid interfering with the working border collies, according to township officials.

Montclair is not the only Essex County municipality to experiment with using dogs to chase away geese. This summer, Nutley used a similar approach to chase away the Canadian Geese in its municipal parks.
