Montclair Woman Worked On Property Deeds Without Law License
The Essex County Register of Deeds and Mortgages Office worker charged people up to $295 to prepare legal documents, prosecutors said.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — A Montclair woman who worked as the Essex County Assistant Register of Deeds and Mortgages has pleaded guilty to practicing law without a license, prosecutors announced Monday.
Sharon A. Doers, Essex County Assistant Register of Deeds and Mortgages, pleaded guilty before a Superior Court judge to practicing law without a license. Doers, 68, of Montclair admitted to charging members of the public $295 to prepare legal documents needed for the transfer of deeds and related work, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office stated.
Doers admitted to beginning to engage in the illegal practice of law in September 2016 and continuing to November 2017, prosecutors said.

Under the terms of her plea agreement, Doers is expected to receive a probationary sentence and will be barred from any future public employment in the state of New Jersey, prosecutors said.
Sentencing is scheduled for July 10, 2018.

The Essex County Register of Deeds and Mortgages Office preserves and records property transactions for all 22 municipalities within the county. The office also maintains documents pertaining to mortgages and transactions for liens, foreclosures and mortgage cancellations, and records honorable discharges for veterans. It generates more than 46 million dollars in revenue annually, according to the agency’s website.
