NJ Now Has 100 Weed Dispensaries (Here's Where To Find Them)
Gov. Phil Murphy: "Reaching 100 cannabis dispensaries is a huge milestone that shows we are headed in the right direction."
NEW JERSEY — The legal marijuana industry continues to grow by leaps and bounds in New Jersey, with more than 100 cannabis dispensaries now open for business in the Garden State, state officials reported Wednesday.
When New Jersey legalized recreational cannabis in 2021, there were just 12 medical dispensaries in the state. Now – only three years later – there are a combined 102 medical and recreational dispensaries, according to the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJCRC).
The state’s law temporarily allowed local towns and cities to roll out local bans on cannabis businesses, which more than 60 percent of them did. See Related: Marijuana Is Legal In NJ. But Can Towns Still Ban It?

Despite the bans, there is now at least one dispensary in 20 of 21 counties in New Jersey (Salem County is the only one without one).
Meanwhile, sales totals continue to rise, state officials say.

On April 21, 2022 – the first day of recreational sales in New Jersey – gross sales of nearly $1.9 million were reported. Recreational cannabis sales hit $673.9 million in 2023, and medicinal cannabis reached $99.58 million for the first three quarters of 2023.
NJCRC commissioner Jeff Brown said the 100-dispensary mark is a “major milestone.”
“After having just 12 alternative treatment centers for more than eight years, we have seen a proliferation of businesses in the last two that clearly demonstrates consumer demand and the potential of the cannabis industry in New Jersey,” Brown said.

It’s not just dispensaries that are joining the green rush in New Jersey. There are now more than 200 operating cannabis licenses in the state, including 23 cultivators and 15 manufacturers.
“We have been thoughtful and deliberate about establishing New Jersey’s cannabis market that protects patient access, keeps New Jerseyans safe and prioritizes equity,” NJCRC chair Dianna Houenou said.
“It is heartening to see how well the market is thriving while accomplishing those commitments,” Houenou said.
Gov. Phil Murphy said that his administration’s goal has been to develop a stronger, fairer and more equitable adult-use cannabis market.
“Reaching 100 cannabis dispensaries is a huge milestone that shows we are headed in the right direction,” Murphy added.
