NJ Assemblywoman Makes History As Youngest Committee Chair
Britnee Timberlake also broke ground as the first female chair of the Assembly Commerce and Economic Development Committee.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — New Jersey Assemblywoman Britnee Timberlake has notched another career highlight on her belt, becoming the youngest person in the history of the Legislature to chair a state committee.
Timberlake, a 35-year-old Democratic Party member, was recently appointed as chair of the Assembly Commerce and Economic Development Committee. She is the only woman to ever serve at the head of the group.
Timberlake represents the state’s 34th District, which includes Clifton, East Orange, Montclair and Orange.

It isn’t the first time that Timberlake has made history as a legislator. In November 2014, Timberlake became the youngest county commissioner elected in the state of New Jersey. After being named president of the Essex County Board of Commissioners in 2014, she became the only African-American female to hold such a position in the state at the time.

The assemblywoman will become one of nine members appointed by Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin to serve as chairpersons for the first time. She brings more than 11 years of experience to her committee as a practitioner.

Timberlake said she is “honored” to take the reins of the Commerce and Economic Development Committee, and that it will mark a milestone as she begins her new term in the General Assembly.
“During a time when businesses and communities are suffering due to the pandemic and other long-time systemic issues, this committee is paramount,” Timberlake said.
The assemblywoman said plans on the horizon include rebuilding and growing New Jersey’s businesses, workforce, housing stock and development projects, as well as making long-term investments in the state’s infrastructure.
“Together with various stakeholders, leadership, and my colleagues, we will promote legislation that makes smart investments to grow the economy, enhance all residents' prosperity and quality of life,” Timberlake said. “It is my top priority to make sure these goals are achieved sustainably and equitably for all New Jersey residents.”
