NJ Transit Train Strikes ‘Trespasser’: Long Delays For Multiple Lines

A NJ Transit train struck a person in North Jersey, causing delays on the M&E and Montclair-Boonton lines.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A NJ Transit train struck a person on Friday morning in Newark, causing a temporary service suspension and delaying trains on the Morris & Essex and Montclair-Boonton lines, authorities say.

According to NJ Transit, Montclair Boonton line train 6202, which originated from Montclair State University, struck a “trespasser” near the Broad Street station in Newark around 5:30 a.m.

None of the 130 customers and crew suffered an injury, authorities said.

The Newark Department of Public Safety said that members of the Newark Fire Division responded to the NJ Transit train tracks west of Broad Street around 6:10 a.m. and helped to free the male victim, who was pinned between the train and a retaining wall.

Emergency responders transported the injured man to University Hospital in Newark, authorities said.

NJ Transit police are conducting an investigation, Newark authorities stated.

The incident caused a temporary suspension on the M&E and Montclair-Boonton lines, with residual delays approaching nearly two hours. NJ Transit rail passes and tickets were cross-honored by NJ Transit buses, DeCamp Bus and Lakeland Bus.
