Now Enrolling: Free Summer Literacy & Leadership Program

Montclair, NJ — Freedom School @ The Mark is back for another summer of learning, leadership, and joy—and it’s completely FREE for families! This six-week program, inspired by the Civil Rights Movement and rooted in the vision of the Children’s Defense Fund, provides high-quality academic enrichment to prevent summer learning loss while fostering a deep love of reading and a strong sense of community.

Spots are filling fast for students entering grades 3-8, while our Kindergarten-2nd grade class is already at capacity, with a waitlist now open. Families interested in enrolling their children should register before the last spaces are taken.

A Day at Freedom School

Each morning at Freedom School starts with Harambee!, a high-energy, call-and-response gathering where scholars sing, dance, cheer, and affirm themselves and each other. This vibrant kickoff sets the tone for a day filled with engaging activities designed to build confidence, literacy skills, and a love of learning.

After Harambee, scholars dive into culturally relevant books that celebrate their identities and histories—many of which feature characters and stories that reflect their own experiences. With the support of trained college-aged mentors, children read aloud, discuss big ideas, and strengthen their literacy skills in a nurturing and affirming environment.

Beyond reading, scholars engage in arts, STEM activities, field trips, and social action projects that encourage them to see themselves as community leaders. They explore important social issues, develop critical thinking skills, and gain the tools to advocate for themselves and others.
