Rep. Sherrill Seeks 15 Community Projects To Pitch For Federal Bucks

Last year, Rep. Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey nailed down funding for all 10 "community projects" she sent to the federal government.

NEW JERSEY — Last year, U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey nailed down funding for all 10 “community projects” she submitted to the federal government. And this year, she’s looking for suggestions for the next 15 possible winners.

On Thursday, Sherrill – who represents the state’s 11th Congressional district – announced that her office has begun accepting proposals for community project funding to the House Appropriations Committee in fiscal year 2023.

For the fiscal year 2022 budget, Sherrill submitted requests for infrastructure projects in Bloomfield, Hopatcong, Morris Plains, Randolph, Stanhope, Totowa and West Orange. She also submitted funding requests for suicide prevention services in Essex, Morris, Passaic and Sussex counties, for flood mitigation on the Peckman River, and for an expansion of a collaborative project by the United Way of Northern New Jersey. This year, each member of Congress is able to submit up to 15 requests to the House Appropriations Committee. There is no guarantee that submissions will be included in the final appropriations bill to receive funding, but Sherrill said she plans to “fight hard” for each project.

“When Congress relaunched this program last year, I jumped at the opportunity to bring our tax dollars back to NJ-11 to address critical issues facing our community,” Sherrill said.

“The projects I secured funding for this past year will help create jobs, drive our local economic growth, and improve the quality of life for our communities,” the congresswoman added. “I am ready to build off this success for the next fiscal year.”

The requests are all subject to review by the House Appropriations Committee and the Congressional budget process. In order to take effect, appropriations bills approved by the House Appropriations Committees must be agreed to by both houses of Congress and signed into law by the president.

Anyone in the 11th district who has a community project proposal or has questions about the selection process should review the Community Project Funding Resource Guide. Questions should be directed to RepSherrillAppropriations@mail.house.gov. To submit a Community Project request, click here.

The deadline to submit an application is April 18 at noon. Any project requests selected and submitted by Rep. Sherrill must and will be publicly disclosed, both on her website and on the website of the House Committee on Appropriations.

The 11th District includes municipalities in Essex, Morris, Passaic and Sussex counties.
