Essex County Residents Encounter Discolored Water After Main Flushing: Officials
The North Jersey District Water Supply contracts with Newark, Bloomfield, Montclair, Nutley, Cedar Grove and Glen Ridge in Essex County.
ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Authorities announced Thursday that the flushing of water mains may cause residents in multiple Essex County areas to experience discolored water, but that the issue isn’t creating a safety hazard.
According to a Newark city news release issued at 11:51 a.m., local residents may see discoloration in their water caused by flushing of water mains by North Jersey District Water Supply (NJDWS). The issue affects areas served by the NJDWS, which supplies water to the city from the Wanaque Reservoir System.
The NJDWS website states that it contracts with the following towns in Essex County:

- Cedar Grove
- Glen Ridge
Discoloration in Newark is expected to continue until the afternoon, city officials said.
“Please note the water is safe to drink and use,” city officials stated. “There is no bacterial contamination. Residents are advised to flush the water in their homes for 5 to 10 minutes to clear out any discoloration.”
