Student Death On Montclair College Campus Causes ‘Profound Sadness’

MONTCLAIR, NJ — The Montclair State University community is mourning a Wallington resident after the student’s on-campus death, administrators announced Wednesday.

According to a statement from the college, Abderrahmane “Abdu” Mefti, a freshman at the school, died unexpectedly.

Authorities believe that his death was not the result of any criminal actions, administrators said.

Vice President for Student Development and Campus Life Dawn Meza Soufleris wrote that Mefti’s death has caused “profound sadness” in the community.

Montclair State University administrators said there are on-campus resources for the bereaved:

“Counselors are available for all students, 24 hours a day. Call Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at 973-655-5211 and select Option ‘2.’ Students may also contact the Dean of Students Office for assistance. Employees can get free, confidential support from our Employee Assistance Program by calling 800-242-7371.”

Montclair State administrators urged anyone in crisis to call or text the nationwide “988” Suicide and Crisis Lifeline for free and confidential support.

“Our deepest sympathy goes out to Abdu’s family and friends at this difficult time,” administrators said.

FATAL FALL

Wednesday’s tragic announcement comes a week after a separate fatal incident involving a youth on the MSU campus.

On Oct. 11, police launched an investigation into a fatal fall from a parking deck at Yogi Berra Stadium. The deceased was not a student at the university, and MSU administrators say they are not aware of any other connections he had with the school.
