Montclair has the fourth-lowest tuition and fees among public universities in New Jersey, administrators said. Meanwhile, student debt at MSU averages $22,000, which is “far lower” than the national average of $32,637. Read More: Student Debt Rising In NJ, But Montclair State Bucks Trend: Study

MSU said it will grant more than $40 million in institutional aid, the highest total in university history. Nearly 85 percent of students receive some form of financial assistance, and more than 30 percent will continue to see all of their tuition and fees covered. An additional 14 percent will pay less than $1,000 per year of their tuition and fees, and 24 percent will pay less than $10,000.

Just one-third of students – who are not eligible for income-based assistance – will pay the full cost, administrators said.

STATE TUITION BILL

Earlier this month, a trio of state lawmakers made a push for a new bill in the New Jersey Assembly, citing worries about the affordability and accessibility of higher education. If it becomes law, the legislation would cap tuition increases for undergraduates at public colleges and universities to 2 percent over the prior academic year.
