WATCH: Montclair Fire Hospitalizes 2, Displaces 16

The fire began in the basement of a Glenridge Avenue antiques store but soon spread to the apartments above, Montclair fire officials say.

Montclair, NJ – A three-alarm fire at a Glenridge Avenue building sent two people to the hospital and displaced 16 residents on Saturday, Montclair fire officials said.

According to the Montclair Fire Department, firefighters arrived at 229 Glenridge Avenue – which was home to Jerry’s Antiques and several upper floor apartments - around 3:30 a.m.

Firefighters managed to rescue multiple residents from their apartments and from the building’s fire escapes, Deputy Chief Robert Duncan stated in a release.

Montclair firefighters didn’t suffer any injuries during the incident, but emergency responders transported two residents suffering from smoke inhalation to the hospital.

The building – now uninhabitable - sustained heavy fire damage to the basement and 1st floor, and has been red carded, Duncan stated.

As a result, 16 residents are now displaced, Duncan said.

According to Duncan, the fire started in the basement of an antiques store, but “the products of combustion quickly spread to the apartments above.”
