Broncos Wrestling Wins Tournament

The Montville Broncos wrestling team is on a roll.

The Broncos won three matches Sunday to win their division's championship at the 17th annual Montville Broncos Duals at Montville Township High School.

Montville concluded the tournament, which began Saturday, with a 5-0 record to claim the Division B crown. The Broncos defeated Danbury (Conn.) 42-37, Red Nose of Ridgefield Park 73-12 and Wayne Rec 47-44 to claim the title.

The Broncos lost to Desire New Jersey 52-21, but because Desire was a mixed team, the result did not count toward the final standings.

Sam Cali (112) won all four of his bouts, while Mike Monica (136) won three bouts and pcked up a win via forfeit.

Drew Rosenswieg (118) and Michael Glasser (96) provided strong support for Montville. Rosenswieg won three bouts and Glasser two.

For Montville coach Michael Monica the win was an indication of what he can expect of the Broncos this season.

"This was a good setting of where we are this season," Monica said. "I saw a lot of good today, but I also saw some bad things that we are going to have to work on."

Among the good were the performances of Rosensweig and Glasser.

Rosensweig won his three bouts by pin. His first came against Danbury as the eighth-grader pinned Will Mills in 1:16. He followed with a pin of Red Nose's Matt Ulinski and ended his day by pinning Wayne's Vinny Gencarelli in a quick 26 seconds. His only loss came against Desire's Ryan Burkert in a decision.

"I had good momentum today," Rosensweig said.

"He's a protege," Monica said of Rosensweig. "He's going to be a monster on the mats this year."

Meanwhile, Glasser started his day off with a 6-1 decision over Danbury's Jason Gomez and followed with an impressive 16-0 decision over Dale Georgianna of Red Nose. He suffered a pin against Desire and lost a 2-0 decision to Wayne's Brandon Kui.

"I had a lot of confidence going into today's bouts,' Glasser said. "Winning the title is special. We haven't won it in a long time."

"Michael looked good today," Monica added. "He's getting better every week."

As they did on Saturday, the Broncos started Sunday off slowly, trailing Danbury 18-6 before Ron Rumsby got things going with a pin of Patrick Latimore in 1:12. Montville led 27-21 after Glasser's win and relied on their upper weights to pull out the match.

The Red Nose match was a rollover for Montville, as the Broncos won all but three bouts.

The match against Wayne was the cloesst of the day and threatened to ruin Montville's perfect record.

Again, it was Rumsby who began things.

With the Broncos trailing 15-6, Rumsby pinned Wayne's Michael Simone in 2:30 to cut the lead to 15-12. Montville never looked back after that, although Wayne cut the Broncos' lead to 30-27 after Anthony Castiglia defeated Eddie Marucci 3-1 at 104.

However, Montville won the next three bouts to increase its lead to 47-27 before Wayne won the final three matches, the last won by forfeit, for the final score.

"We feel we can win some state titles this year," Monica said. "If the team stays healthy, we'll be in good shape."

For Rosensweig and Glasser, the championship was bittersweet.

"This is our last year of wrestling together," said Rosensweig, who has been wrestling with his teammate and classmate for eight years. "We'll be going our separate ways next year."
