Montville Cop Claims He Was Passed Over For A Promotion In Lawsuit: Report

Lt. William Aquillo claims he was unjustly passed over for a promotion to captain. He is seeking the promotion and back pay, and damages.

MONTVILLE, N.J. — A municipal police lieutenant has sued the police chief, administrator, and the township, claiming he was discriminated against after suffering an injury and that the chief passed him over for a promotion, The Daily Record reported.

William Aquillo is seeking an immediate promotion to captain and unspecified punitive and compensatory, along with back pay, the report stated.

The lawsuit claims that Aquillo scored first on the captain’s test, but Chief Rudy Appelmann allegedly told him that he was “not ready” and recommended Mark J. Olsson and Andrew Caggiano each be promoted to captain, the report stated.

The lawsuit alleges that Appelmann created “a hostile work environment” for Aquillo,” discriminated against him due to a disabling medical condition, excluded him, and ruined his career and impeccable professional reputation.

Aquillo also alleges in the suit that Appelmann wouldn’t accommodate his work schedule so that he could attend physical therapy for a torn rotator cuff he sustained while on duty, according to the report.
