Montville Recreation Department Chess Classes

Learn to Play Chess - Grades 2 - 6

The Montville Recreation Department will be sponsoring CHESS CLASSES for students in Grades 2-6. Chess has been associated with greater cognitive abilities, coping and problem-solving capacity, and even socioaffective development of children. That is why our program believes in building a solid foundation for beginning and intermediate players which will continue throughout their lives whether on or off the chess board.

Our next session of classes will cover:

* The Story of Chess, The Chessboard As Your Kingdom,

* Get Ready to Play (set up board & pieces), A Numerical Value,

* The King, The Straight Away Rook, The Pawn, Rewarding Brave Pawns, Rook and Pawn Game,

* The Bishop and Pawn Game, The Queen and Pawn Game, * The Knight, Check, Checkmate, Stalemate, Draw,

* Castling, En Passant (very basic), How to read and write chess,

* Exchange Value of Pieces (Bishop for Knight Trade, The Exchange, Values Change with Position), Drawn or Tied Games (perpetual check),

* Stalemate, 3-move repetition of position, the 50 Move Rule, agreement), Fool’s Mate, Scholar’s Mate, Use of a chess clock,

* The 30 Rules of Chess: Opening Principles, Endgame Principles,

* Pins, Forks, Discovered Checks, Double Checks, Skewers,

* Checkmating the lone king: Checkmating with King & Queen, Checkmating with King & two Rooks, and

* The Endgame, Tactics, Position, Some Openings For Children.
