Montville Recreation Department - Reading & Writing
Reading & Writing Classes - Grades 3-5 & 6-8
The Montville Recreation Department will be sponsoring READING & WRITING CLASSES for Grades 3-5 and Grades 6-8.
Classes will take place at the Academic Excellence Center, 2 Change Bridge Rd, Suite 203 in Montville—Directions? Call: 973—454-1587.
Grades 3 to 5 - During this accelerated program our certified teacher and reading specialist offers engaging activities to teach children to become strong independent readers and creative writers. Classes will be equally distributed between advancing reading and writing skills. During the writing portion students will learn how to create a story or essay in just 30 minutes! Students will be instructed on the use of several types of openings, lines of dialogue, figurative language, vivid verbs and strong adjectives. During the reading portion your child will gain the confidence and motivation necessary to tackle more challenging books, and by the end of the session, your child will: * Improve comprehension, * Learn decoding skills for challenging words, * Increase fluency and speed, * Become an avid reader, * Improve their ability to focus on understanding books, * Identify main events, character development, setting and plot, and * Learn how to adjust reading speed depending on material.

Classes will take place on Tuesdays: April 14, 21, 28, May 5, 12 & 19 from 4:30pm to 5:15pm and/or Wednesdays: April 15, 22, 29, May 6, 13 & 20 from 5:30pm to 6:15pm.
Grades 6 to 8 - During this accelerated program our certified teacher and reading specialist offers engaging activities which help students become advanced proficient persuasive writers and stronger readers by increasing reading speed and improving comprehension. During the writing portion students will focus on using imagery to establish thesis for a strong opening and will learn to plan and write a persuasive essay in 45 minutes. During the reading portion students will: * Significantly improve reading speed, * Learn techniques to improve concentration and retention, * Decrease homework time, achieve better comprehension, and retain more, * Learn to adjust reading speed depending on material, * Learn a step-by-step approach to determine how information is organized in non-fiction reading, and identify main ideas and supporting details, * Learn effective note-taking and how to incorporate notes into studying for tests, and * Develop strategies for learning new words and incorporating them into your vocabulary.
