Mt. Olive Woman Pleads Not Guilty in Slaying of Ex-Boyfriend

Defense claims victim had alcohol in his system during time of killing, report says.

A Mt. Olive woman and Wharton school teacher has pleaded not guilty to shooting and killing her ex-boyfriend in her home in March.

According to dailyrecord.com, the attorney representing Virginia Vertetis entered a plea for his client in court Tuesday, citing a swell of evidence just received that needed to be examined before going further.

Vertetis is accused of killing Patrick Gilhuley on March 3. Previous reports have indicated the two were formerly romantically involved. Gilhuley was found dead with four gunshot wounds inside Vertetis’s home.

The woman’s attorney, Edward Bilinkas, claimed Gilhuley had alcohol in his system at the time of the crime, the report said.

Vertetis’s bail was lowered from $700,000 to $500,000 in July, and she remains in Morris County Correctional Facility.
