NY Times Bestselling Author Wendy Mass Inspires St Pius X School
Wendy Mass speaks to students in grades 3-8 about the importance of reading.
New York Times bestselling author, Wendy Mass, visited Saint Pius X School in Montville on Thursday, March 17. Ms. Mass is the author of 18 novels for young people, including the popular A Mango-Shaped Space, The Candymakers, Every Soul a Star and her most recent series, Space Taxi.
Ms. Mass spoke to students in grades 3 through 8 and then hosted a Creative Writing workshop for the Middle School students. She encouraged each of them to practice writing and to even start their own club. Ms. Mass told the students, “Read. Read everything you can, but especially read the type of material you like to write.” She even had a long scroll of all 47 rejection letters she received before her first book was published, stressing the importance of never giving up.
“Wendy Mass is truly an inspiration to these children,” stated Principal Sister June Morrissey. ”The students were so excited to hear her speak and we are grateful to her for sharing her experiences with us,” she added.

Additional books authored by Ms. Mass include: Leap Day, the Twice Upon a Time fairy tale series, 11 Birthdays, Heaven Looks a Lot Like the Mall, Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life, Finally, and 13 Gifts. Her books have been translated into 20 languages and nominated for 76 state book awards. A Mango-Shaped Space was also awarded the Schneider Family Book Award by the American Library Association.
