Santa-Spoiling Sub No Longer Working In Montville

Less than a week after telling six-year-olds that Santa isn't real, officials say the substitute is no longer working in the district.

MONTVILLE, NJ — The substitute teacher that told a class of first graders that Santa Claus isn't real is no longer working in the district, Montville superintendent Renee Rotvar said.

The announcement that the substitute would no longer be in Montville classrooms came less than a week after the substitute told six-year-olds that Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the tooth fairy are all figments of the imagination.

Because this is a personnel matter, Rotvar declined to release more information about the substitute. It was not clear if the substitute is fired or left the district voluntarily.

Parents were warned about the substitute's speech in a letter sent home shortly after the Nov. 29 incident by Cedar Hill Elementary School principal Michael Raj.

"Once I became aware of the situation, I immediately spoke to the substitute teacher regarding her poor judgment in making this proclamation to [the class]," Raj wrote in the letter.

He also apologized, writing, "I am sending this letter so that you are aware of the situation and if the conversation comes up at home over the next few days you can take appropriate steps to maintain the childhood innocence of the holiday season."
