5 Moorestown Friends School Students Win Art And Writing Awards

MOORESTOWN, NJ — Five students at Moorestown Friends School, including two students from Moorestown, have been recognized as part of the 2018 Southern NJ Regional Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition, the school announced Tuesday morning.

Junior Serena Lin, of Moorestown, won 10 total awards in the writing categories. She received honorable mentions for her poems “And Then It Was Less Bleak Because We Said So” and “girlhood” and her flash fiction piece “An Autopsy.”

Lin was awarded Silver Keys for her poems “slut,” “kickback,” “kwansaba,” and “molotov cocktail.” She earned Gold Keys for her poems “on outliving one another,” “seasons,” and “back in the ring again.”
Sophomore Hannah Jin, of Cherry Hill, won two honorable mentions for her poems entitled “The Panda” and “Saturday Morning.”

Senior Megan Mininno, of Moorestown, won a Gold Key and is an American Vision Nominee for her mixed media piece “Narrative.” She was one of three students to win awards in art categories.

Junior Vika Kulchyckyj, of Cinnaminson, won two honorable mentions for her photographs “Bloom” and “Standing Alone.”

Sophomore Calvin Bell, of Pennsauken, won a Gold Key for photography for his piece “Light’s Prospective.”

As Gold Key winners, Bell, Mininno, and Lin will have their works considered for national awards. Additionally, as one of only five “Best in Show” works of art selected from the South Jersey region as an American Vision Nominee, Mininno’s work will be considered for the American Voices Medal for artists — the highest regional honor presented by the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts. Panelists look for works with the most originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
