A Much-Needed Face-Lift
Tom Sadler paints the Third Floor in the Church Street Rec Center for his Eagle Project.

Nothing makes a space more inviting than a little redecorating.
Tom Sadler, a junior at Moorestown High School, completed his Eagle project at the Church Street Rec Center, giving the third floor a new look.
Sadler, a member of Troop 70 in Cherry Hill, painted the 5,138-square-foot room a White Tudor Cream with Ruby Red trim. He also moved out some of the old furniture and brought in four sofas and two arm chairs from Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore.

“That was a generous donation,” said Sadler. “Some of the furniture that was up here was really old.”
In addition to ReStore, Benjamin Moore Design Center, Moorestown Hardware, Wharton Hardware, Passariello’s and Taylor Rental helped support the project.

The room, which was once the Moorestown High School cafeteria, is used by the Department of Parks and Recreation for classes and by community groups for meetings and special events. It is operates as a game center after school and on Friday and Saturday evenings.
The Eagle project, including planning, gathering supplies and painting, took about 200 hours to complete, said Sadler. He also had 30 scouts helping him.
“I think doing this will have a lasting affect,” said Sadler. “A lot of people use this room. It’s going to benefit all those people who use the room.”
Sadler, who participated in Parks and Recreation programs when he was younger, has also volunteered for the Summer Recreation Program. When it came time to pick a project for his Eagle Scout, the Department of Parks and Recreation was a perfect fit.
Now the painting is done, Sadler will do a follow-up to his project proposal.
“I’ll write what I could have improved on, what I changed from the original proposal,” Sadler said. He’s hoping to finish it in February and then present it to his leaders and then the Boy Scout Council.
He’s looking forward to the process being complete and getting his Eagle Scout.
“It’s a big honor,” he said. “It will help with a lot of things in life.”
