While the Continental Congress was signing the Declaration of Independence, a silent, radical, and often heartbreaking revolution of conscience was fracturing Moorestown. Join the Historical Society at the Moorestown Lbrary for a 45-minute revolutionary journey presented by Gary Ell. He will explore:
·The 1776 Loophole: How women and Black residents voted in NJ over a century before the rest of the nation.
·The Smith Brothers: The Quaker delegate who walked away from the Continental Congress. 
Fractured Families: Local names like the Hollinsheads and Cowperthwaites torn between faith and the call to arms.
·The Exiles: The untold story of Moorestown families forced into exile in Canada.

About the Speaker
Gary Ell is an internationally published photojournalist, investigative journalist, and communications executive whose career spans over 25 years of leadership across the government, defense, and civic sectors. 
Gary channels his investigative and storytelling expertise into historical preservation and civic engagement. He serves on the Board of Trustees for the Historical Society of Moorestown, acts as a leader for the town’s 250th initiative, and has served on the board of First Amendment Voice.
As a direct descendant of the founding families who established the West Jersey Colony and settled Moorestown, Gary’s passion for local history is deeply personal. He works to curate exhibitions and trails that keep our collective heritage alive.

As our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of American independence, join the Historical Society of Moorestown for a memorable evening celebrating Moorestown’s remarkable connection to the Declaration of Independence — and the family ties that continue to connect us today.
 
In the summer of 1776, while daily life carried on along King’s Highway, Moorestown native Timothy Matlack was in Philadelphia helping to shape the course of history. As secretary to the Continental Congress, Matlack is widely recognized as the man who penned the final handwritten version of the Declaration of Independence. 
 

The evening will feature:
● Brief remarks by Chris Coelho, author of Timothy Matlack,Scribe of the Declaration
● A celebration of the Matlack family legacy and the many branches of the family tree that spread far beyond Moorestown
● Opportunities to connect with fellow descendants and history enthusiasts
● The famous Dusty Road Sundae from Matlack’s Dairy Bar
● Washington’s Beer, specially brewed by Double Nickel Brewing Company in honor of Moorestown’s 250th celebration
Your ticket will include: Light fare, 1 drink token, 1 ice cream token. Additional beverages and ice cream will be available for purchase.
All proceeds benefit the Historical Society! 
The Double Nickel Brewing Company is situated along the Pennsauken Creek on land once connected to William Matlack’s original 17th-century property holdings.

As many know, the Moorestown 4th of July Parade celebrates our national pride and culture of freedom through an apolitical, non-partisan celebration of community. The parade takes place along Main Street between Union Street and Chester Avenue. 
Most exciting will be a public reading of the Declaration of Independence&nbsp;along the Parade route at Percheron Park on the corner of Main Street and High Street at 11:45 a.m. We invite people of all ages to read a line from a large printing of the Declaration. The Declaration will have extra room at the bottom for people to sign it.
