NJ Singer Shot Dead Being Considered For New Statewide Honor

MARLTON, NJ — Lawmakers are moving to designate a "Christina Grimmie Day" in honor of the late singer and South Jersey native who was murdered by a gunman after a concert nearly 10 years ago.

Grimmie, who grew up in Evesham Township, went to Cherokee High School before gracing major stages in the world of television.

After building an audience on YouTube while performing at her home, she went on to try out for NBC's "The Voice" and finished in the top three finalists in 2014.

Grimmie also performed on "Ellen" and "Dancing with the Stars."

On June 10, 2016, she was signing autographs after a show when Kevin Loible shot the popstar before turning the gun and killing himself.

Now, lawmakers want to make June 10 stand forever in her honor on the anniversary of her death.

"This is a bipartisan resolution, because honoring Christina isn't a political issue," said Senator Latham Tiver (District 8), one of the sponsors of the motion. "It's a New Jersey issue. It's a South Jersey issue."

Tiver introduced Resolution 137 alongside Senator Troy Singleton (District 7) on May 11.

"It is altogether fitting and proper...to recognize Christina's lasting cultural impact, honor her legacy as a New Jersey artist, and promote awareness of efforts to support victims of unexpected tragedies," the resolution reads.

In the years following her death, Christina's family continues to honor her legacy through the "Christina Grimmie Foundation."

The group works to support individuals and families who face sudden hardships and crises associated with gun violence.

A weekend of activities, including a benefit concert, is being held from June 5 to June 7 as part of "Grimmie Fest" to support the foundation.
