Hand Counting Of Mail-In Ballots In Burlington County Won't Be Finished On Election Night

About 20,000 mail-in ballots have been impacted, according to published reports.

The hand counting of at least 20,000 mail-in ballots in Burlington County will be suspended at 8 p.m. Tuesday night and will resume at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning, the Burlington County Times reports.

Partial results will not be announced Tuesday night, meaning many close races may be left up in the air, according to the report.

A total of 50 workers normally work Election Day, but more have been added to assist in the ballot counting process, according to nj.com. The mistake was first discovered early Tuesday morning.

Polls remain open through 8 p.m.

It is unlikely to have an impact on the presidential race, as Democrat Hillary Clinton is expected to easily defeat Republican Donald Trump. However, delays could have an impact on the Third Congressional District race between incumbent Republican Tom MacArthur and Democrat Frederick LaVergne. The district covers parts of Burlington and Ocean counties.
