Man Killed, Officer ID'd After Police Shooting In Burlington Co.

An armed man and an officer exchanged gunfire in the backyard during a house fire, authorities said.

PEMBERTON, NJ — A man killed by police and the officer accused of shooting him during a Burlington County house fire were publicly identified Tuesday.

Marvin Taylor, 57, was killed Saturday afternoon when he exchanged gunfire with Pemberton Township Police Officer Kyle McQueen, according to the NJ Office of the Attorney General (OAG).

A 911 caller reported smoke coming from a home at 3:22 p.m. Saturday on Woodland Avenue in Pemberton Township. The township's police and fire departments responded to the incident in the town's Brown Mills section.

Officers learned that an armed person, later identified as Taylor, was in the backyard. Police positioned themselves in the woods-line area of the backyard and ordered Taylor to drop the weapon, according to the OAG's preliminary investigation.

Taylor, of Browns Mills, was shot when he and McQueen exchanged gunfire, the OAG said. It's unclear whether investigators know who shot first.

Officers aided Taylor at the scene before he was flown to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was pronounced dead at 5:36 p.m. Saturday.

No one else was injured.

A gun was recovered near Taylor after he was shot, the OAG said.

State law requires the OAG to investigate all deadly police shootings. Those findings must be presented to a grand jury to determine whether any officers should be indicted.
