Moorestown Council Approves $70K Change Order in Old Library Demolition

The change order was approved after asbestos was discovered behind the walls, Township Manager Scott Carew said.

Moorestown, NJ -- The first change order for the demolition of the old library building was approved during Monday night’s council meeting at town hall, and it remains unclear as to when the actual demolition will begin.

“This will extend the time it takes to demolish the building,” Moorestown Township Manager Scott Carew said.

Demolition had been scheduled by the end of the year.

The change order approved Monday night was for $70,045.92. The original contract awarded to Meco Demolition Inc. in October was for $421,000.

The change order concerns additional work that will need to be done to remove asbestos from behind the walls, discovered by the demolition company after the contract was awarded.

Resident Timothy Daniels pointed out that tests are usually performed before the contract is awarded so there are no surprises. He asked if those tests were performed.

Carew said he would check with the township engineers, and ask Ragan Design Group to conduct an independent survey of the building.

The item was included on the consent agenda.

Council also approved two resolutions concerning consulting services related to the development of a housing plan for the township.

The first calls for $3,172.65 from the Affordable Housing Trust Fund to go to Capehart Scatchard as the township’s attorney for the matter. The other calls for $20,224.83 from the fund to go to Clarke Caton Hintz for planning services.

The township also awarded $4,000 to Construction Administration for an IT generator.
