Moorestown Police, PSE&G Warn About Phone Scams
Customers should be cautious of callers who demand immediate payment via a pre-paid card, and workers who show up to "check a problem."

Moorestown, NJ -- Moorestown Police and PSE&G are warning customers to beware of phone scams this holiday season.
Customers should be cautious of callers who demand immediate payment via a pre-paid card, and wary of phony utility workers showing up at their door to “check a problem,” New Jersey’s largest utility company said in a release.
“The only way to protect against these scams is for customers to be cautious when contacted by someone seeking access to their home or demanding immediate payment,” PSE&G Vice President of Customer Operations Greg Dunlap said. “Even one customer being robbed or cheated is one too many.”

Police said the scammers use scare tactics, including threatening to terminate service if they do not receive immediate payment with a pre-paid credit card.
PSE&G offers a number of payment options, and would never require a customer to use one specific type of payment.

Door-to-door scammers use trickery, including showing up at someone’s house dressed like a utility worker and saying they need to “check a problem,” police said. This often leads to a home burglary. Residents are advised to always ask for I.D.
When in doubt or if suspicious in any way, PSE&G urges customers to call the number listed on their bill: 1-800-436-PSEG (7734).
Report all scam attempts by calling the utility and the Moorestown Police Department at 856-234-8300. Complaints can be filed with the FTC at www.ftc.gov/complaint.
