Mysterious Drones Reach South Jersey, Flying Over Burlington Co. Town

The FBI is investigating as the devices fly in clusters over different parts of New Jersey for unknown reasons.

EVESHAM, NJ — A surge of unexplained drones flying throughout the state has hit South Jersey.

Drone activity has increased recently in Evesham, the township's police department said Thursday. Like the others that have appeared en masse over New Jersey in recent weeks, it's unclear who's operating them and for what reason.

"We are collaborating with state and federal authorities to identify the drone operators and understand the purpose of this activity," the Evesham Police Department said.

Unexplained drones have been spotted flying over different parts of New Jersey since mid-November. The drones have made nightly flights in some areas and sometimes travel in clusters.

The FBI is leading an investigation into the matter. But Gov. Phil Murphy said Thursday there is "no known threat to the public at this time."

The first sightings were reported a few weeks ago, when footage posted by the Associated Press showed them flying over homes in Morris County.

Most of the drones have appeared in North Jersey — primarily in Morris and Somerset counties. Some local officials have noted that the aircraft seem to be hovering near important facilities such as water reservoirs and police stations.
