Summer Reading for Everyone

The is gearing up for Summer Reading 2011, and this year, it’s not just for kids anymore. Our are designed to take all our patrons, from preschoolers through senior citizens, on a worldwide reading adventure!

In the Children’s Room, the library offers activity sheets especially for preschoolers, with fun prereading activities to do at home. Children completing kindergarten can pick up a “Suitcase Full of Stories” reading log to track the books they read all summer long. 

Our popular “One World, Many Stories” reading program offers children entering grades two through six the chance to visit the library and report on the books they read.  Participants can win exciting prizes including stuffed animals, tote bags, books, gift cards, and more. Registration for all children’s summer reading clubs is going on now, so stop by the library to join the fun!

This summer the library will present a variety of story times to take our littlest listeners on big adventures through books. Brand new this summer is Baby Time, a story time and playtime for children from birth to age 2. Summer story times will also include Time for Twos and Story Time and Crafts for children ages 3-6. No registration is required for summer story times.

Old favorites like Tuesday movies and Friday game days will return this summer, along with our brand-new Lego League on Monday afternoons.  Our popular student-led reading programs, South Jersey Boys Read and Girls Love to Read, will return, and special presentations by Wallaby Tales Traveling Zoo in June and Mad Science in July will round out a summer of world-class library adventures for children.

Teen Summer Reading will kick off June 17, with a special registration event and prize preview from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in front of the library. Readers can win library backpacks and flash drives for reading a certain number of books, and can enter raffles for a variety of exciting gift cards and other prizes, like tickets to a Riversharks game or a Justin Beiber singing doll.

All registered summer readers are eligible to play in an end-of-summer “Silent Library” competition. Look for other fun activities all summer long, like themed movie trivia nights, cool crafts and workshops to prep for college or getting a job! The Teen Department will even be teaming up with the Rec Center for a movie trilogy showing and an open-mic poetry contest. For the first time, adults aged 18 and older can join the Summer Reading fun through the “Novel Destinations” program, running June 13 through Aug. 10. For every book you read about another culture, fill out a prize entry form. We will hold weekly drawings throughout the summer for delicious prizes offering winners “a taste of the world.” The program will culminate on Aug. 10 at 7 pm, when Moorestown native Donna Gottardi, author of "Raining cats and rats: Lessons and life in Chinese Siberia," joins us to discuss her book and worldwide travels. A grand prize drawing for the adult Summer Reading program will complete the evening.
