NEW JERSEY — Two women verbally harassed Gov. Phil Murphy and his family while they ate outdoors at a restaurant in Red Bank on Saturday in an incident that was recorded and posted to social media.

“Oh my god Murphy, you’re such a d***,” one woman told Murphy at the beginning of the profanity-laced tirade. “You having fun with your family? In the meantime, you’re having all this other b******* going on.”

When one of his sons asks the woman to put her mask on, she turns his attention to him, cursing at him and saying she doesn’t need a mask because there’s nothing wrong with her. The women also said they weren't drunk.

“I like your Trump phone case,” his son said. “Guess who Trump likes? He likes my dad.”

“No he doesn’t like your father,” one of the women responded.

Speaking during a news conference Monday afternoon, Murphy offered empathy toward people who are suffering through the strain of the pandemic.

He declined to discuss security details, but he did say that there was a third woman with the other two who pushed them away.

"The stress levels are overwhelming, and they're not unfounded," Murphy said. "There's too many people out of work, too many businesses, too much economic hardship. I mentioned 16,500 families will have Thanksgiving without a family member who was with them last year. I don't condone out-of-bounds behavior, but I'm a big boy and I think I speak for my wife, but let's leave my family out of this. Let's all keep each other in our prayers right now, because this is an extraordinarily stressful period that we're in."

Murphy has refrained from taking shots at the president during the pandemic, and in return, Trump has called Murphy, “a terrific guy,” praising New Jersey’s building of hospitals.

"You can't have a better representative than this man,” Trump said of Murphy after meeting with him in April. “That, I can tell you. Plus, he's an old Goldman Sachs guy." Read more here: Gov. Murphy Meets Trump As NJ Coronavirus Deaths Hits 1-Day High

In New Jersey, residents can eat outdoors at restaurants without wearing a mask. In the video, Murphy is first seen without a mask on, but is wearing one by the end of the clip.

Some New Jersey residents and lawmakers have been critical of Murphy’s handling of the pandemic, particularly the impact the shutdown has had on business owners and the state’s economy. Many have called on the governor to increase the indoor capacity limit to 50 percent.

Polls, however, have shown vast public support for Murphy's handling of the crisis.

Murphy enjoyed a 62 percent favorability rating in the most recent Rutgers-Eagleton poll, and lawmakers on both sides were critical of the women who harassed the Murphys over the weekend. Both State Sen. Declan O'Scanlon (R-13) and State Sen. Vin Gopal (D-11) criticized the woman on Twitter.

"I've been incredibly humbled by the amount of Republicans who have reached out to me," Murphy said. "That's New Jersey. We're certainly not always going to agree on policy, but when we're up against it, we come together unlike any other American state."

Last week, the governor announced stricter guidelines for indoor gatherings ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Read more here: Gov. Murphy: NJ To Lower Gathering Limits Amid Coronavirus Spikes
