Eastern Morris Twp. Has Power, Work on Roads Continues

Getting trees, downed lines cleared a major project.

Most of the residents of the east side of Morris Township had power restored by 4 p.m. Monday, Police Chief Dennis Reilly said.

From Mount Kemble Avenue to West Hanover Avenue, power still was not restored. The chief said all fallen trees have been cleared on West Hanover Avenue, but there are a number of power lines and two transformers that are still down. He said it could take the power company days to restore all power in that area.

Sections of the Fairchild and Burnham Park areas of the township had power by Monday afternoon.

Besides West Hanover Avenue, parts of Sussex Avenue, Normany Parkway and Woodruff Avnue by Whippany Road were still closed late Monday. Cars abandoned on Baily Hollow were removed but the road was still closed because of debris as of late Monday, the chief said.

Earlier in the day, Capt. Rich Ferrone of the Morris Township Police Department said he expected clearning West Hanover Avenue and Sussex Avenue of downed trees and poles would prove key as JCP&L worked to restore power in the area. Opening those roads is a high priority for the town in general, as those roads are crucial for traffic, Ferrone said.

"Right now, there is no east-west corridor into Morris Township with those two roads being closed," he said.

There were hundreds of feet impassable because of downed trees and other damage from this weekend's storm Monday, he said. In one instance, a tree even fell on top of a car, though its owner was unhurt, Ferrone said.

Ferrone said given the degree of work needed on those roads, getting them open remains "a big project."
