Cops: Man Had 28 Grams of Shrooms at Concert

Morris Plains resident one of 32 people arrested at two-day Phish concert series at Jones Beach.

A Morris Plains man was arrested Tuesday night at the in Wantagh, N.Y., after allegedly being found with more than 28 grams of psilocybin mushrooms during a Phish concert.

According to New York State Police, troopers patrolling outside the theater at Jones Beach observed a man in a gray Jeep in possession of a marijuana cigarette at about 6:30 p.m.

Darryll Vanwinkle, 23, of Morris Plains, was also found with 28 grams of psilocybin mushrooms in his vehicle, police said.

Vanwinkle was arrested for second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class A felony, and unlawful possession of marijuana. He was held for arraignment in Nassau County First District Court.

Vanwinkle was one of 32 people arrested between Tuesday and Wednesday during the two-day Phish concert series.

Phish concerts are widely known for their drug use. In 2010, 64 people were arrested and more then $250,000 in drugs were seized at a Phish concert in Atlantic City.

According to Press of Atlantic City in November of 2010:

Some people's idea of a good time included 70 tanks of nitrous oxide, more than 550 grams of marijuana, about 135 grams of mushrooms and more than 100 pills of various prescription narcotics, along with brownies, cookies and Rice Krispies treats laced with marijuana. Police also confiscated 21 cookies containing LSD.
