Morristown High School Wrestlers Dungee and Towns Make States

Desmond Towns and Darren Dungee will represent Morristown High School at the state tournament in Atlantic City this year.

Morristown High School's Desmond Towns and Darren Dungee both placed in the top three of the Region 3 wrestling tournament at Union High School on Saturday and have earned a trip to the state tournament in Atlantic City, scheduled for the weekend of March 4.

Dungee, Morristown’s 215 pound senior, led the way on Saturday as the No. 1 seed lived up to his reputation, overcoming Delbarton’s Dean Sullivan with a 5-2 decision in the Region 3 finals.

Dungee was battling an illness throughout the tournament, but he wouldn’t let it get in the way of reaching AC. Before beating Sullivan, he also defeated Frank Schaafsma of Seton Hall in the second period of the semifinal round earlier in the day.

“I’m tired, and sick,” said Dungee, who didn’t appear to be as affected by the illness on Saturday as he was on Friday. “I slept a lot better last night. I was just trying to get through it. I didn’t really have any goals for today. But it feels great to be aggressive and wrestle a good match.”

Also advancing to the state tournament with a win over a Delbarton rival is 145-pounder Desmond Towns.

The junior punched his ticket to AC with his second win over Josef Johnson, this time a 3-2 decision win in the consolation finals, earning a third place finish.

“There are no words to explain how I feel right now,” Towns said after winning his consolation round match on Saturday. “This is an amazing feeling. It’s like after they win the Super Bowl in the NFL, 'I’m going to Disney World.' That’s what it feels like.”

Towns found himself in the consolation wrestlebacks after losing to Cranford’s Matt DiGiovanni in the third period of the semifinal round.

Delbarton will be to the state wrestling tournament.
