On Valentine's Day, Five Sweet Things You Can Do For Your Community

Many local organizations are in need of volunteers.

You've already bought a gift for your sweetheart, but there are others in the community, both individuals and organizations, who could use some heartfelt generosity on Valentines's Day. From Homeless Solutions to the Department on Aging, here are five places that are hoping you will show them some love:

  1. You Need To Know That the Morris County Department on Aging in Morris Township Needs About Twenty Minutes of Your Time: Here's what the department  had to say:  "Do you have movies of your travels? Slide programs of your gardens and plants? Perhaps you have a collection of art photos that you would like to talk about? The Morris County Department on Aging is looking for volunteers to make short, 20-minute presentations to seniors as part of the Morris County Nutrition Program." If you can help, contact Lucille Duetsch, Nutrition Project Coordinator, at 973-285-6857.
  2. You Need To Know That Needs You to Lend a Hand: Homeless Solutions, which has its shelter in Morris Township, is seeking volunteers. Help is needed for: dining preparation, baking, lunch service, kitchen/pantry organizing, mentoring, landscaping, food shopping and the "Read to Me" program, which is open to all ages.
  3. You Need To Know That the Jersey Battered Women's Service Needs Assistance: Volunteers arrange play time for children and help them with conflict resolution skills, organize projects and parties and help with administrative tasks. Volunteers work one three-hour shift each week for one year. If you can help, contact Kirsten Kielblock at 973-267-7520, ext. 129.
  4. You Need To Know That the Depends on Volunteers to Operate: Morris Museum volunteers greet visitors, answer phones, collect admissions, staff the Museum Shop and help with educational programs. If you can help, call 973-971-3721 and ask for the volunteer coordinator.
  5. You Need To Know That the American Red Cross of Northern New Jersey is recruiting volunteers for its Disaster Action Team. Volunteers must sign up for one twelve hour shift per week, when they will be on call to respond to disasters. If you can help, contact Charles Maltbie at 973-538-2160 x219 or email maltbiec@redcrossnnj.org.
