"It is the recommendation of the Township of Morris that trick or treating activities tonight be postponed or cancelled. Many neighborhoods are still without power. Additionally there are still wires, trees and tree limbs down throughout the Township that make it hazardous for the children trick or treating," Quinn said in the statement.

"Several neighborhoods have postponed this annual ritual until Saturday afternoon. It is the recommendation of the Township Committee that Trick or Treating in your neighborhoods be postponed until Saturday afternoon," Quinn said.

Morris Township police had said earlier in the day via the Nixle emergency service that Halloween was still on, even after this weekend's early snowstorm—but they did urge caution.

"With so many power lines down, parents should use discretion on allowing their children to go door to door," the police department said.

And police department, in a message distributed by township officials Sunday night, urged parents not to allow children to go trick-or-treating door-to-door unattended. It also stressed that anyone who has organized a neighborhood trick-or-treat program check for downed wires on the route.

"Like you we believe the safety of our children is more important than costumes and candy," the township said in its announcement.

If your child is gearing up for trick or treating (or even up for hanging out indoors, in costume), he or she could win a chance to meet Heidi Klum, as well as $1,031 for charity. All you need to do (on his or her behalf) is submit a photo of your kid in costume. .
