Rabid Raccoon Found on Patriot's Path in Morris Township
The Morris Township Health Department confirmed the raccoon tested positive for rabies.

MORRIS TOWNSHIP NJ — The Morris Township Health Department confirmed that a raccoon found in Morris Township tested positive for rabies.
The raccoon was located on Patriot's Path near Inamere Road.
"An infected animal carries the rabies virus in its saliva and infects other animals or people through bites, scratches, and contact with the saliva," the health department said in a statement. "Once infected animals become ill, they may bite or attack other animals or people."

Raccoons, foxes, woodchucks, skunks, bats, and stray cats are common carries of the rabies virus.
The Health Department provided these tips for residents to avoid the virus:

- Make sure your cat or dog is properly vaccinated and up to date on their rabies vaccination.
- Keep your garbage in a container with a tight fitting lid to prevent attracting animals.
- Clean up spilled bird seed.
- Don't leave pet food outside for extended periods of time.
- If you notice any stray dogs, cats, or other animal in your area acting strangely, contact the Health Department (973-326-7390).
- If you're bitten or scratched by any suspected animal, act promptly. Immediately wash the bite wound with soap and water. Call your physician and the Health Department.
- If your pet is bitten or engaged in a fight with a wild animal, contact the Heath Department and your Vet.
