Rec Soccer Girls Honored at Morris Plains Borough Council Meeting
The U-13 team presented Mayor Frank Druetzler with the first annual Mayor's Cup.
At Thursday night’s Morris Plains borough council meeting, Mayor Frank Druetzler was presented with the Mayor’s Cup, an award that the Morris Plains U-13 girls rec soccer team won in November of 2010 after winning a six-team tournament that included teams from Morris Township, Morristown, and Morris Plains.
Morris Plains, the No. 1 seed, defeated a No. 2 seeded team from Morristown in the championship to earn the cup, in dramatic fashion: the game was tied after four quarters and went to penalty shots. On the 20th penalty kick, the teams were tied at one, but an unanswered goal by Morris Plains gave the team the win.
“It was truly a team effort,” said head coach Bob O’Brien. “It wasn’t one single position; it was 18 girls that played as one team.”
“It was an exciting game,” said Druetzler, who had attended the November game at the Frelinghuysen School, along with the mayors of Morristown and Morris Township.
Two players from the team, Jenna Brophy and Casey O’Brien, presented Druetzler with the cup and a picture of the team, which the mayor placed outside the council chambers in a trophy case.
“We have a team here that accomplished quite a bit,” said O’Brien.
