ICE-Involved Crash Prompts Police, Sheriff Response In Morristown: Officials

MORRISTOWN, NJ — A Morris County Sheriff's officer present at the scene of what appeared to be an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation was responding to a car crash, according to officials.

On Tuesday morning, several people reported seeing masked ICE agents detaining at least two people near Speedwell Avenue in Morristown.

With the ICE agents were at least two Morris County Sheriff's officers, as well as Morristown police officers, officials said.

The Morris County Sheriff's Office clarified on Wednesday that they had no involvement in the ICE activity.

However, the sheriff's officer who was in the area was conducting a battery change for one of the office's Project Lifesaver clients when federal agents waved him down, according to officials.

"There was apparently a motor vehicle accident possibly involving an individual from Homeland Security Investigations," the sheriff's office said.

Once the sheriff's officer determined there were no injuries and Morristown police arrived, he left the scene, according to officials. A second sheriff's officer arrived later, but left without getting out of his car, they added.

Patch has reached out to both the Morristown Department of Public Safety and the Department of Homeland Security for more information on the operation, and has yet to hear back.
