Busy Ballot: Morristown Council Primary Has 7 Candidates Eyeing 4 Seats

Four Democrats, two Republicans in four wards seeking votes.

There are a lot of residents who want to help make the Morristown community the best place possible, and seven of them have thrown their hats into the ring for the June Primary Election.

The list of seven includes two incumbents and five challengers spread over four wards.

In Ward I, Democrat Christopher Russo has put his name on the ballot. That ward is currently represented by Independent Rebecca Feldman, who does not have file a petition until the day of the Primary – June 2 – to be included on the November General Election ballot.

In Ward II a changing of the guard is imminent, as Democrat Hiliari Davis Oyesanya will be opposed by Republican Sydney Williams, Jr. They’ll be fighting in November to take over for longtime councilwoman Raline Smith-Reid, who is not running for re-election.

Williams, the Pastor at Bethel AME Church, made headlines earlier this year when he said students across Morris County came to him and said they were censored in their school when discussing the police shooting incidents in Ferguson, Missouri and Staten Island, New York that occurred in 2014.

The Primary Election is set for June 2 with polls open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the General Election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3.
