Colonials Junior Varsity Tennis Comes Out Swinging
Despite not participating in any preseason scrimmages the Colonials have recorded back-to-back wins to start the season.
Morristown High School defeated Mountain Lakes High School in JV girls tennis on Wednesday.
The final tally was 5-0. The doubles matches took place at the Frelinghuysen Middle School tennis courts. This was the second game of the regular season for both schools. It also was the second victory in a row for the Colonials JV team.
Despite not participating in any tennis scrimmages in the preseason the Colonials came out swinging their rackets, resulting in back-to-back wins to start the season. The Colonials defeated the Parsippany Hills High School JV team in their season debut on Tuesday with a final tally also of 5-0. The JV girls demonstrated their tennis skills and ability to work in tandem in playing their opponents.

Under the tutelage of head JV tennis coach Steve Geller, who has coached at Morristown High School for 12 years, the lady Colonials have been practicing since Aug. 8 in preparation.
"I like the way they have been playing the past few days and the practices during the summer were also productive," Geller said. "We conducted two-a-day practices during the summer. In the mornings we worked on conditioning and in the afternoons the girls participated in challenges. The girls improved not only as individuals but also as team players."

Unlike the varsity tennis coaches who are able to work with veteran players Geller has to work with a new class of incoming players each school year. But he said does not let that bother him.
"Working with new players every year presents its challenges but it can be rewarding in many ways," he said. "When I get them I can help them improve their game and correct any bad habits. When the JV girls move on to the varsity level they will have learned a lot."
Geller said he is optimistic about the 2010 JV team.
The Morristown Colonial girls JV team has performed at a consistently good rate the past couple of years. In 2008 the Colonials' record was 15-3-0. In 2009 the Colonials record was 14-4-0. For the 2010 season, Geller said, he wants the JV team to play well enough to be eligible for a county or state title.
The Colonials next JV matches will be against Mendham High School on Monday Sept. 13.
