Demolition To Begin Soon At Shuttered Morristown Rehab Center

Demolition is slated for a commercial building located at 95 Mount Kemble Avenue, the former home of the Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — Demolition is set to begin soon at a long-closed rehab facility in Morristown, which ceased operations over five years ago.

All necessary permits from the Town of Morristown and the Township of Morris have been obtained to fully demolish the structure at 95 Mount Kemble Avenue, said Karen Zatorski, a spokesperson for the Atlantic Health System, parent company of Morristown Medical Center.

The current structure, formerly home to the Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute, is set to be demolished starting in early February. According to Zatorski, the demolition will be carried out in carefully planned phases over the next several months, following all safety and environmental protocols.

The building at Mt. Kemble, with a long history in Morristown, first opened in 1892 as All Souls Hospital. It eventually ceased in-patient services in 2019 after Atlantic Health System opened a 38-bed rehab center at Giralda Farms in Madison.

The Madison facility provides customized, individualized rehabilitation programs designed to meet the specific needs of individuals recovering from stroke, brain injury, neurological conditions, trauma, spinal cord injury, amputation, and orthopedic injuries.

The Mt. Kemble facility was temporarily reactivated in 2020 as part of Atlantic Health System's strategy to combat COVID-19, with select adult patients being transferred there for care.

At the height of its operations, the Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute had approximately 78 licensed beds—40 subacute and 38 acute—along with more than 3,000 annual inpatient admissions, according to Atlantic Health System.

Zatorski told Patch that future plans for the site are still under internal discussion and was unable to provide additional details at this time.
