Driver ID'd In Fatal Morris Co. Crash That Put Car Along River
The single-car crash killed a 41-year-old Jersey City resident, according to Long Hill police.

LONG HILL, NJ — Authorities identified the person killed in Tuesday morning's single-car crash that put the significantly damaged vehicle along the Passaic River in Long Hill. Lajoy Battle, 41, of Jersey City, died at the scene, according to the Long Hill Township Police Department.
The crash occurred at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday near the Valley Mall — a shopping center in Gillette, said Police Chief Ahmed Naga. Witnesses saw a blue 2021 Lexus IS300 speed through the mall parking lot before it crashed behind HomeGoods, according to police.
The vehicle struck a tree and landed in low-lying water along the river. Battle was the car's only occupant, Naga said.

Sgt. Missy Sugalski and Officer Christopher Geresi entered the water and broke the windows to access the driver. Battle was unresponsive and had no pulse, police said.
Extensive vehicle damage hindered efforts to extricate the driver. The crash significantly injured Battle, who paramedics pronounced dead at the scene. Officials transported them to the Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
