Generation SOS: Saving Our Teens from the Drug Scourge

The statistics are frightening. The leading cause of death for adults 18-45 in our country is drug overdose. Through the Generation SOS Program, on Wednesday, March 2nd, over 400 Madison High School freshmen and sophomores witnessed one of the lucky ones, survivor Jason, a 28-year-old recovering drug addict who spoke to the students for two hours about his journey. The journey began in 8th grade with binge drinking, ending with the death of his good friend from opioids he shared with him. His harrowing tale of the death of six of his fellow students at a private NYC high school to his four years of drug-induced stupor at George Washington University left the students speechless. You could hear a pin drop in the auditorium. This presentation ended with a question and answer session where small pieces of paper were circulated to the audience so they could anonymously ask questions of Jason. The box was full, but the surprising thing was the number of students who raised their hands and asked many probing questions. Generation SOS enabled Madison High School’s youngest students to hear first-hand the risks of substance abuse. A presentation of this importance should be held in every high school in America.
