Mom Killer Who Hid Corpse In Morristown Trash Pleads Guilty

Jared Eng, 25, sent texts saying "I'm free," after killing his mother and disposing of her body in Morristown, prosecutors said.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — A Manhattan man who killed his mother and dumped her body in Morristown to hasten the distribution of his inheritance will serve at least 18 years in prison, according to the prosecution.

Jared Eng, 25, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Friday, according to District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

The shocking murder case began in February when Eng reported Chin, 65, was missing for several days, authorities said.

Prosecutors said police later found Chin's beaten body in a garbage container near their family home in Morristown. Eng was charged with murder, and two women identified as his girlfriends were accused of assisting him in moving Chin's body, according to authorities.

Following the murder Eng sent a series of text messages in which he wrote, "It's done," "I'm free," and that he had gotten rid of his "problem," police said.

According to authorities, he also changed the passwords on his mother's bank accounts, looked for inheritance lawyers, and researched ways to dispose of her body, including a Google search for "DIY bone meal."

“This was a brutal and shocking murder of the defendant’s own mother, and while nothing can undo this tragedy, today’s guilty plea represents an important step towards justice. My thoughts are with those who continue to mourn Ms. Chin’s loss,” Bragg said.

Prosecutors suspected Eng fought with his mother over his deceased father's fortune that was left to Chin, which Eng told the New York Post was $10 or $11 million.

Eng is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 18. He faces a minimum of 18 years in prison and a maximum of 22 years to life in prison.
