Morristown Medical Center Adds Two New Surgical Robots

Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center has added two state-of-the-art da Vinci Xi Surgical Systems to its surgical service offering. The systems will allow more minimally invasive (robotic) procedures to be performed at the medical center, which has completed over 8,900 robotic cases to date.

A hernia surgery, bowel surgery, and hysterectomy were performed the first day the systems were operational.

“Morristown Medical Center is dedicated to serving the health needs of the community, and that means offering more minimally invasive surgical options to help our patients return to their lives faster,” said Dr. Michael Hernando, director of minimally invasive and robotic surgery at Morristown Medical Center. “With a total of three systems, we’re able to offer our patients the latest technology piloted by a highly experienced surgical team, less downtime, and a shorter waiting period to schedule the surgery. We’re also expanding our minimally invasive surgical procedures offered in an outpatient setting.”

Minimally invasive surgery allows surgeons to perform certain surgeries using instruments inserted through small incisions rather than a long, large incision. Minimally invasive surgeries often allow patients to return home faster, and have led to fewer complications, faster recovery, less blood loss and need for pain medication, and reduced scarring.

Examples of surgeries that can be performed minimally invasively include bariatric surgery, general surgery, head and neck surgery, pediatric urologic surgery, transoral surgery, gynecologic surgery and gynecologic oncology, and urologic and urogynecologic surgery.

Morristown Medical Center was one of the first hospitals on the Eastern Seaboard to perform a robotic sacrocolpopexy to correct female pelvic prolapse and is the only hospital in NJ to treat endometrial cancer patients with an add-on to the da Vinci Surgical System called Firefly™ Fluorescence Imaging.
