MORRISTOWN, NJ — Morristown's streets are set to beam with Irish pride Saturday for the first Morris County St. Patrick's Day Parade in three years. But those attending, or even driving through the area that day, should account for the anticipated traffic.

The Morristown Bureau of Police will begin road closures sometime between 11:15 and 11:30 a.m. Saturday, before the parade's noon kickoff at Town Hall (200 South St.). The parade will travel west on South Street, go around the Green and continue west on Washington Street.

The Morris County parade — arguably the largest for St. Patrick's Day in New Jersey — brings tens of thousands of spectators to Morristown. Drivers should expect "significant" traffic delays from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day, police said. Officials will place detours, but those driving through Morristown should plan additional time or alternate routes during that window.

The Morristown Parking Authority will make all of its garages free from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. But officials will "strictly" enforce parking restrictions along the parade route, ticketing and towing illegally parked vehicles, police said.

Police said they'll provide additional details on road closures later this week.

The Morris County St. Patrick's Day Parade will be the first since 2019, with the past two getting canceled because of COVID-19. The parade was originally set for last Saturday but got postponed because of weather.

The event has been "rain or shine" unless extreme weather conditions render it unsafe, according to its website. Since the Morris County parade began in 1979, the event had only been postponed twice because of weather — in 1993 because of a snow state of emergency and in 2010 because of severe conditions.
