Your Library: More Than Just Books

The is a great place to find books to read. What a shock. What is surprising, however, is your favorite library isn't just about books. Check out some of these interesting activities coming soon:

1. On Wed., Oct. 12 at 7 p.m., meet Miriam Ascarelli, author of the book Independent Vision: Dorothy Harrison Eustis and the Story of the Seeing Eye. She will speak about the Philadelphia socialite whose money, leadership and vision led to the formation of The Seeing Eye. 2. On Thurs., Oct. 13 at 6:15 p.m., the library will screen the 2002 Palme d'Or Cannes Film Festival Nominee, Russian Ark. Director Alexander Sokurov brings the cultural and spiritual life of Russia’s art and history to life in this film featuring the Hermitage Museum and the Winter Palace of Saint Petersburg. Doors open at 5:30, film begins at 6:15. The film will be in Russian with English subtitles. Refreshments will be provided. Films are free and no registration is required.
    
   
3. You Need to Know About the Director's Book Club: On Thurs., Oct. 13 at 10 a.m., join a discussion on The Postmistress by Sarah Blake. Weaving together the stories of three very different women loosely tied to each other, debut novelist Blake takes readers back and forth between small town America and war-torn Europe in 1940.
   
   
4. On Thurs., Oct. 20 at 7 p.m., Morris County natives Michael Miranda and Danielle Burro will discuss serving in the U.S. Army as military police. Both have worked with and trained military police forces in Iraq and Afghanistan and provided assistance in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti. Both will present a fascinating visual and personal perspective on the modern-day events in which their units were involved. Refreshments will be served. 
   
   
5. On Tues., Oct. 25 at 7 p.m., Morris County resident Bill Ruddick will talk about his 5,300 mile bike across Canada in 2010. Ruddick will present some of his best photos and videos taken along the way and will provide an animated first-hand account of the experience. Cyclists who ride one mile a year, ride 1,000 miles a year, or who don’t ride at all—but enjoy travel and adventure—will be sure to enjoy this special event.
