ESSEX COUNTY HOMICIDE RATE
In December 2023, the prosecutor’s office announced that Essex County has been seeing its lowest homicide rate in decades, noting a 27 percent drop in homicides from the previous year.
“This is by no means a victory lap since each homicide represents a loss of life, and each one pains us deeply,” Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens said. “We will continue to work in close partnership with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners to reduce all violent crime in Essex County, especially homicide.”
All homicides and suspicious deaths in Essex County are investigated by the prosecutor’s homicide task force, which consists of detectives from the prosecutor’s office, the Newark Police Department, the New Jersey State Police, the Essex County Sheriff’s Office and the East Orange, Irvington and Orange police departments.
