Newark Firefighters Injured, Families Left Homeless After Blaze

A fire left eight adults and five children without a home; the blaze also injured several local firefighters, authorities say.

NEWARK, NJ — Several Newark firefighters suffered injuries while combating a three-alarm blaze on Sherman Avenue on Wednesday that left eight adults and five children without a home, authorities say.

About 70 Newark firefighters responded to the conflagration around 8 a.m., which started in an unoccupied, three-story residential building at 150 Sherman Avenue, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.

The flames also spread to an occupied, three-family structure at 152 Sherman Avenue, authorities said.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control at 10: 18 a.m., authorities stated.

A pair of Newark firefighters suffered minor injuries and received EMS treatment. In addition, falling debris inside one of the buildings injured a fire captain. Another fire captain suffered from smoke inhalation. Both captains were transported to the University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Newark authorities stated Wednesday afternoon.

As a result of the fire damage, eight adults and five children were forced to relocate from their home, officials said.

The Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit is investigating the cause of the fire, authorities said.
